Eleanor Smith 95, 1925-2021
Eleanor Smith passed away peacefully at Hillside Nursing Home and Rehab in Hemphill, Texas. She was born to William and Oma Calvert on June 19, 1925 in Prairie Point, Texas (now a ghost town near Weldon, Texas). Eleanor's family moved to Dickinson when she was 12 and she graduated high school in 1942. Soon after she met and married her sweetheart Reagan Smith in 1944. After Reagan got out of the Air Force, they moved back to Dickinson to raise their family, James Robert and Linda Kay. They loved to go camping, fishing and family reunions. Eleanor decided to go to college in case she might ever need to be the breadwinner. Eleanor got her Bachelors and Masters of Education degree in 1969 by working days and traveling nights to Sam Houston in Huntsville. After teaching a few years in Dickinson and after her kids had gone, she and Reagan moved where the fishing was great, Hemphill, Texas. Reagan started out at KOA and wound up being a home builder. Of course, Eleanor become an architect and accountant to his business while still teaching. She was from that wonderful generation that worked really hard, loved her family, friends and country. After Reagan retired from home building, they travelled the lower 48 states in their RV. He was the pilot and she was the navigator. When her husband, Reagan Smith, of 63 years and her son James Smith (Smitty) had passed away, her daughter, Linda took her Mom to Alaska, Hawaii and Israel. So Eleanor saw her USA and beyond. She was a wonderful mother, a great teacher, a good friend and a faithful servant. Eleanor was a member of the Church of Christ in Hemphill.
Eleanor leaves her daughter, Linda Workman of Hemphill; her daughter in law, Shizuko (Suzie) Smith of Hemphill; her grandson Read Ebersole, and his wife Rebecca; and great grandchildren, Atlas and Lucy Beth of San Antonio. Eleanor also leaves her brother, Barney Calvert (recently deceased) and his wife, Louise Calvert of New Braunfels. As well as a host of family and friends.
Graveside services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2021 in Low's Chapel Cemetery, Milam, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Jimmy Clark officiating.
