Luther Earl "Red" Davis, 97, of Hemphill, Texas passed away Monday, August 9, 2021 at his residence.

Red was born in Pleasanton, Texas on May 7, 1924 to Luther Lange Davis and Myrtle Mattie Whittly Davis.  He was a 52 year resident of Sabine County, having previously resided in Angelina County.  He worked for many years as a self-employed contractor and heavy equipment operator before retiring just a few short years ago.

Red was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corp as a Reconnaissance Paratrooper and received three purple hearts.  He also had earned a Silver Star, Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal.  He served in North Africa and Italy for much of his military career and has written many stories of his time spent in the war.

After WWII, Red worked as a Superintendent for the Trans Arabian Pipeline.

He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign War in both Hemphill and Lufkin.  He was also a member of the American Legion and the Lions Club.  He was a founding member of the Sabine County Republican Party, a co-founding member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and a founding member of the Sabine County Chamber of Commerce.  But most of all, Red was a proud American Patriot and Texan.

Red was a much loved member of Sabine County and will be missed by many friends across the community.

A memorial service for Red will begin at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the VFW Post 10351, 3049 TX-184, Hemphill, Texas with seating to begin at 5:00 p.m.

As per his wishes, Red will be buried in a Veteran's Cemetery.

Cremation arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.
