Nolan was born September 20, 1931 in Sabinetown, Texas as the oldest of four children to William Augustus Ferguson and Ollie Burleson Ferguson. He was a lifetime resident of Sabine County, a place he dearly loved, and a graduate of Hemphill High School. He judged many horse shows in his life and competed in rodeos as a calf-roper. He also liked to deer hunt back when you could run dogs.
He was a well-loved member of his community and a loving husband to his wife, Frances, for 63 years before her death in 2019. He was a great father and grandfather who loved his family and his Blue Bell Ice Cream. He made his profession of faith and was baptized in his early 60's.
